Fuvahmulah’s Must-Dive Sites: Discover the Home of Tiger Sharks

Fuvahmulah Island, known as the "Home of Tiger Sharks", offers some of the most unique and thrilling dive sites in the Maldives. The island's isolated location and diverse marine ecosystems make it a hotspot for pelagic encounters.

Here are some famous dive sites in Fuvahmulah:

01. Tiger Point

Qualifications: Openwater diver and above

Depth: 5-15 meters

Known for its tiger shark population, this site provides divers with a rare opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close in their natural habitat.

Marine life: Tiger sharks, Giant trevally, hawksbill turtles, occasionally schools of small jacks and snappers.

Current : Very mild, a little bit of surge.

04. Farikede

Qualifications: Advance open water and above

Depth : 15 - 20 Top reef, 25 - 45 Mid

Marine life : Thresher shark, Barracudas, Giant Trevally, silver tip shark, grey reef sharks.

Seasonal - Hammer heads, Oceanic Mantas, Whale sharks and Mola Molas.

Description: A deep and exhilarating dive site where divers venture into the blue in search of pelagic species. Strong currents add to the adventure, making this site ideal for thrill-seekers.

Current : Strong

06. Bilhifesyhi

Qualifications : Openwater and above

Depth : 10-15 Top reef, 20 - 35 Mid

Marine Life : White tip reef sharks, Lobsters, Dog tooth tunas, Fusiliers, Hawksbill Turtles, Silver tip sharks.

Description : This dive site features an impressive underwater wall adorned with overhangs that create a dynamic and visually striking landscape. The wall gradually slopes down to a depth of 35-40 meters, providing a diverse range of marine environments to explore. Hard corals dominate the area, while pockets of soft corals thrive beneath the overhangs, adding splashes of vibrant color.

Current : Small to medium.

14. Thoondu

Qualifications : Openwater and above

Depth : 5 meter top reef, 15 - 35 meters mid

Marine life : Thresher sharks, silver tips, snappers

Seasonal - Oceanic Mantas, Mola Molas, Scallop Hammer heads and whale sharks

Descriptions : A dramatic underwater wall dive featuring a small overhang that serves as a focal point for marine activity. Nearby, a cleaning station attracts the elusive thresher sharks, offering divers a chance to observe these majestic creatures in their natural behavior.

Current : Small to medium, occasionally strong.

17. Rasgefannu

Qualifications : Openwater and above ( Snorkeling possible as well )

Depth : 5 meter top reef, 15 - 25 meters mid

Marine life : Schooling batfish, Fusiliers, Anemones, Cruising Thresher sharks, Lobsters.

Descriptions : This historic dive site was once the island's harbor, now transformed into an underwater haven. It features steep walls that descend dramatically from 5 to 20 meters, providing a striking backdrop for marine life. Beyond the walls, the site transitions into a gentle slope, offering a gradual descent perfect for exploring diverse ecosystems.

Current : Almost no current. Occasionally a bit of swell on the top reef.

18. Sea Fan (Also known as Bondo Fanno)

Qualifications : Openwater and above ( Snorkeling possible as well )

Depth : 5 meter top reef, 12 - 26 meters mid

Marine life : Schooling trevally, Fusiliers, Anemones, Cruising Thresher sharks, tunas, lobsters.

Descriptions : This dive site is renowned for its expansive area of vibrant sea fans that stretch from 14 meters to 35 meters in depth. The site also features small overhangs teeming with fascinating macro life, making it a favorite for underwater photographers and those who enjoy exploring intricate marine habitats.

Current : Almost no current.

13. GemiskiyyFannu

Qualifications : Advance Open water and above

Depth : 5 - 8 meter top reef, 15 - 30 meters mid

Marine Life : White tip reef sharks, Lobsters, Dog tooth tunas, Fusiliers, Hawksbill Turtles, Silver tip sharks

Seasonal - Cruising Oceanic Mantas, Whale Sharks and Thresher sharks.

Descriptions : Situated at the northern tip of the island, this dive site offers an exhilarating drift dive experience. Divers can glide along the currents while enjoying vibrant coral formations and the possibility of encountering pelagic species in the blue.

Current : Medium to very strong.

12. Neregando

Qualifications : Openwater and above

Depth : 5 - 8 meter top reef, 15 - 30 meters mid

Marine Life : White tip reef sharks, School of Giant Barracuda, Dog tooth tunas, Fusiliers, Wahoo, Silver tip sharks, Giant trevally, Schools of Big eye trevally,

Seasonal - Thresher shark, Oceanic Mantas and Whale shark.

Descriptions : This dive site is located on the west side of the island, offering divers a breathtaking experience. The area is renowned for its stunning hard coral formations, which are vibrant and teeming with marine life. As divers descend, they will encounter deep overhangs that create a fascinating underwater landscape

Current : Medium to strong.
