Do's:

  1. Dress Modestly: Fuvahmulah is a traditional island, so wear modest clothing, especially when away from the beach or dive areas. Swimwear is only appropriate at designated beaches or resorts.
  2. Respect Local Customs: Understand and respect Islamic practices, including prayer times and religious holidays like Ramadan.
  3. Ask for Permission: Always ask before taking photographs of locals or entering private areas. Some places, especially mosques, might require permission for non-Muslims to enter.
  4. Learn Basic Dhivehi Phrases: Greeting locals with "Assalaamu Alaikum" (Peace be upon you) or a simple "Shukuriyaa" (Thank you) can show respect and appreciation.
  5. Support Local Businesses: Buy from local markets, dine at local cafes, and support community-based tours.
  6. Keep the Environment Clean: Dispose of trash properly and participate in beach or ocean clean-ups to help preserve the island’s beauty.
  7. Respect Marine Life: When diving, avoid touching coral reefs or disturbing marine creatures, especially sharks and turtles.

Don'ts:

  1. Avoid Public Displays of Affection: Public affection, including hugging and kissing, is not common or appropriate in the Maldives, as it may offend the local culture.
  2. Don’t Bring Alcohol into Public Spaces: The Maldives is a Muslim nation, and alcohol consumption is prohibited outside designated resorts and guesthouses.
  3. Don’t Be Disrespectful During Prayer Time: Be mindful of the call to prayer (five times a day) and avoid loud activities near mosques.
  4. Do Not Litter: Littering is a serious issue, and polluting the island or ocean can damage the ecosystem. Always dispose of waste properly.
  5. Avoid Provoking Sharks or Wildlife: While shark diving is popular, do not provoke or disturb the wildlife. Keep a respectful distance and follow the dive instructor’s guidelines.
  6. Don’t Wear Inappropriate Clothing in Villages: Avoid wearing bikinis or revealing clothing in villages or community areas.
  7. Don’t Ignore Cultural Etiquette: Avoid behaviors like pointing with fingers, raising your voice in public, or criticizing the local customs.
  8. Do Not Create Noise Around Residential Areas: Be mindful of local residents and keep noise levels down, especially at night or near homes and quiet areas.
